The Inlaks Research and Travel Grant 2026

The Inlaks Research and Travel Grant (IRTG) is awarded to registered PhD students at Indian universities, to undertake short term visits to institutions abroad to collect material, use facilities and consult experts.

This Grant is available to PhD students pursuing research in areas of humanities and social sciences at Indian universities only.

Duration and Value:

The Grant offers support for a maximum of three months to undertake research at an institution, access libraries and meet with experts in the field. 

It includes: 

  1. Reasonable travel allowance reimbursable on actuals (up to USD 1,000). 
  2. Maintenance expenses (up to USD 2,000 per month). 
  3. Funds for buying materials and making copies of relevant literature reimbursable on actuals (up to USD 500). 
  4. Health allowance reimbursable on actuals (up to USD 500). 
  5. Any material collected by the candidate using the said allowance (literature, copies, instruments etc.) will become the property of the candidate’s institution for wider use.  

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. The applicant must be an Indian passport holder residing in India.
  2. The applicant must be born on or after 1st January 1991. 
  3. The applicant must hold a confirmation of PhD synopsis by the institution/university they are pursuing their PhD at.
  4. The applicant must have a first-class Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. 
  5. The applicant must be pursuing a PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences ONLY.
  6. The applicant must have proof of positive communication from the experts that they wish to engage with.

 

Exclusions:

Applicant can only apply for either the Inlaks Research and Travel Grant (IRTG) or the Inlaks-Kings India Institute Studentship in any given year.

Selection Process:

The candidate will be expected to go through a two-tier selection process: 

  1. A first round of shortlisting based on a desk review of the written application submitted. 
  2. Second round will be an online interview with a panel of experts. 

The applicants short-listed for the interview will be informed by first week of October 2026. The final interviews will be held in early October 2026.

 

Terms of the Grant:

  1. The visit should be realized within 9 months of the date of award. 
  2. Any material collected by the selected candidates (photocopies, literature etc.) must become the property of the applicant’s institution for wider use by future scholars. 
  3. All the above material must carry a statement regarding the support received from the ‘Inlaks Research and Travel Grant’.
  4. The applicant’s must submit a written report in a prescribed format to the Inlaks Foundation within a month of their return.
