This opportunity will enable scholars currently enrolled in PhD programmes at Indian universities to undertake a short-term visit to the King’s India Institute, King’s College London, to collect material, use facilities and consult experts towards their research for their PhDs.

Duration and Value:

The Grant offers support for a maximum of three months to undertake research at an institution, access libraries and meet with experts in the field. 

It includes: 

  1. Travel allowance reimbursable on actuals (up to USD 1,000). 
  2. Maintenance expenses (up to USD 2220 per month). 
  3. Funds for buying materials and making copies of relevant literature reimbursable on actuals (up to USD 500). 
  4. Health allowance reimbursable on actuals (up to USD 500). 
  5. On arrival, King's will support the grantees with GBP 1000 for the entire duration of visit in addition to the amounts mentioned above provided by Inlaks.   


 

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. The applicant must be an Indian passport holder residing in India.
  2. The applicant must be born on or after 1st January 1990. 
  3. The applicant must be a registered PhD candidate at an Indian university for at least two years but not more than three years at the time of application.
  4. The applicant must have a first-class Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. 
  5. The applicant must be pursuing a PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences ONLY.
  6. The applicant must have proof of positive communication from the experts that they wish to engage with.

 

Exclusions:

Applicant can only apply for either for the Inlaks-Kings India Institute Studentship or the Inlaks Research and Travel Grant (IRTG) in any given year.

Selection Process:

The candidate will be expected to go through a two-tier selection process: 

  1. A first round of shortlisting based on a desk review of the application submitted. 
  2. Second round will be an online interview with a panel of experts. 

The applicants short-listed for the interview will be informed by last week of September 2025. The final interviews will be held in mid-October 2025.

 

Terms of the Grant:

  1. The visit should happen between January 2026 and June 2026. 
  2. Of the two fellows, at least one will work with a core academic faculty member based in the King’s India Institute. A list of core faculty members can be found here. There is also an extended network of faculty members based in other departments, but affiliated with the India Institute who can be found here.
  3. Any material collected by the selected applicants (photocopies, literature etc.) must become the property of the applicant’s institution for wider use by future scholars. 
  4. All the above material must carry a statement regarding the support received from the ‘Inlaks-King’s India Institute Studentship’. 
  5. The applicants must submit a written report in a prescribed format to the Inlaks Foundation within a month of their return.
