The Inlaks-Ravi Sankaran Grant for Field Biology, Ecology & Conservation

The Grant supports individuals who would like to undertake an initial project that is expected to lead to a longer-term conservation science and/or implementation project in India. This initiative aims to provide seed money for projects that may have been viewed as unconventional in nature.

 

Important terms 

  1. Where appropriate, applicants for a small grant are encouraged to consider and include the potential role that local communities can play in conservation.
  2. Funding provided includes a stipend and project expenses (not exceeding INR 3 lakh per year). All projects are tenable post 1st August.

 

Duration and Value

  1. The Grant will be available for an initial project of up to one year.
  2. The Grant will award financial support of up to INR 300,000 per year. 
  3. Recipients of the Grant may apply for follow-up funding. When doing so, they must demonstrate the success of the pilot project and show how subsequent funding is essential to bring out the conservation benefits of the project.

 

Eligibility Criteria 

  1. The applicant must be an Indian citizen currently residing in India.
  2. The applicant must be born on or after 1st January 1996. 
  3. The applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree.
  4. The applicant must demonstrate a deep interest in field biology, ecology and conservation through prior involvement in this field. They must also strongly justify how the opportunity will further conservation efforts in India.
  5. The Foundation particularly seeks young applicants with bold and unconventional ideas for tackling conservation problems.

Selection Procedure 

  1.  All the applications will be screened by a committee of experts and shortlisted candidates will be informed.
  2.  The candidates will be selected based on their project proposal and an online interview.

 

Other Details

  1. The Grantees must submit a detailed interim report and a final report at the end of their term. All reports must contain an accounting of funds spent.
  2. Grantees will retain all rights over information generated during the tenure of the opportunity. They must acknowledge support received from the Inlaks Foundation when and where they publish this work.

The Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation, in collaboration with NIROX Foundation and the Centre for Indian Studies in Africa at the University of the Witwatersrand, offers a residency in South Africa to support an Indian artist. The residency provides a comfortable, enabling, stimulating environment – for residents to research, imagine, experience and produce diverse ideas and works, to grow personal and creative practice.

Residency date: 1st October to 12th November 2026

Duration and Value:

  1. The Residency is for six to seven weeks and covers travel and production costs. 
  2. Living arrangements are provided by the Residency.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. The applicant must be an Indian citizen currently residing in India.
  2. The applicant must be born on or after 1st January 1991. 
  3. The applicant may be an emerging and mid-career Indian artist. 
  4. An applicant with a practice in contemporary visual art working in all disciplines may apply. 
  5. The applicant must be proficient in English

Exclusion:

The applicant should not have received any prior grant from the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation for any other overseas project.

Selection Process:

The selection process consists of two stages - desk-review of applications followed by an online interview of the shortlisted applicants.

Candidates shortlisted for the interviews will be informed by last week of July. 

Final results will be released in the first week of August 2026.
